What is the Hoi An Lantern Festival?

The Lantern Festival in Hoi An is a monthly event held every full moon. During this festival, Hoi An ancient town transforms into a magical, glowing spectacle as lanterns of all shapes, sizes, and colors are hung along the streets and floated down the Hoai River. This event started in 1998 and has since become a tradition.

Releasing lanterns is a practice believed to be rooted in Buddhist traditions. The lanterns are often shaped like lotus flowers, each holding a candle. The act of releasing these lanterns is not just visually stunning but also spiritually meaningful. It is believed to honor ancestors, bring about health and prosperity, and make wishes for the future.

What to Expect at the Hoi An Lantern Festival?

On both banks, ancient houses are adorned with countless lanterns, creating a dazzling display of lights that reflects beautifully on the water. The river comes alive with lanterns carrying the wishes of visitors from around the world. You can choose to release your lanterns along the riverbank or from a boat.

Hoi An Lantern Festival Boat ticket:

1–3 passengers: 150,000 VND/boat

4–5 passengers: 200,000 VND/boat

Lanterns are not included in these prices but can be purchased from vendors for 5,000-10,000 VND each. There's no need to book in advance; tickets are readily available at six counters along the Hoai River. After buying your ticket, you'll be guided to the boarding area. The most convenient boarding point is just above An Hoi Bridge.

After about 10 minutes on the water, you’ll start releasing your lanterns. Boatmen provide lighters for the candles. Once lit, you can hold the lantern for photos, make a wish, and then release it into the river. Don’t rush off after your boat ride. Head to An Hoi Bridge for panoramic views of the illuminated river. From the bridge, you can appreciate the full beauty of the Hoai River and its shimmering lanterns. It's the perfect spot for capturing memorable photos of Hoi An at night.

Other Activities at the Hoi An Lantern Festival

During this festival, you can participate in many interesting activities completely free of charge, and the liveliest area is along the river between the Japanese Bridge and Hoi An Bridge. The festival night atmosphere is extremely vibrant with traditional games, dragon and lion dances, and martial arts spectacles performed by skilled artists.

If you join the Hoi An Lantern Festival during Tet Nguyen Dan (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), you will get to participate in lantern decorating competitions and enjoy fireworks. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can participate in fun traditional games like tug of war and "Bai Choi" games (a musical version of bingo, to put it easily) and performances.

In addition to cultural and recreational activities, don't forget to take the time to enjoy the unique local cuisine. Sitting at roadside stalls to eat a bowl of "Cao Lau" or "Mi Quang," or walking while holding a Banh Mi or a cup of "Mót" herbal tea at extremely affordable prices.
