Sa Mu - U Bo Peak Trekking
Sa Mu - U Bo Peak has recently become one of the most fascinating trekking destinations in Vietnam. This star on the rise offers a unique experience that challenges adventurers with its steep slopes and cliffs, but at the same time, breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to explore amazing biodiversity. If you are planning a trekking adventure in Sa Mu - U Bo Peak, this article will provide you with all the information you need to make sure your experience is unforgettable.
Introduction to Sa Mu - U Bo Peak
Sa Mu - U Bo Peak is located in the Ta Xua forest reserve in Bac Yen district, Son La province. With an altitude of over 2750 meters above sea level, this mountain marks the border between Yen Bai and Son La provinces. What makes it special is the dense vegetation cover, composed of ancient trees, grasslands, and especially ancient tea trees that are hundreds of years old.
Sa Mu - U Bo Peak is located in the area that the locals refer to as the “Bermuda Triangle”, within the Ta Xua forest reserve. That is because many planes have mysteriously crashed here, especially during the French-Indochina War and the Vietnam War, with the two most recent ones in 1986 and 1994. There are still pieces of plane wreckage left on this mountain. Over the years, it has aroused the curiosity of many adventurers. The peak, which was officially marked at the end of 2022, is one of the most unspoiled in the Ta Xua region.
When trekking, hikers have the opportunity to explore an incredibly diverse ecosystem. The reward upon reaching the summit is a sea of clouds and spectacular views of the mountains afar, adorned with beautiful rhododendrons.
When is the best time to visit Sa Mu - U Bo Peak?
The best time to visit Sa Mu - U Bo Peak is between the months of September and April, when the weather is cooler and rainfall is less frequent, making the terrain more accessible. In winter, between December and February, temperatures can drop considerably, but the fresh air and unobstructed views of the sea of clouds make the challenge an unforgettable experience for the bravest hikers.

Route 1: Tram Tau - Sa Mu Peak - Hang Dong
This surprising route offers the most beautiful scenery and is not repetitive.
Route 2: Xim Vang - Sa Mu Peak - Xim Vang
A simple route for those who only need to reach the peak. This route is the least interesting in terms of scenery.
Route 3: Hang Dong - Sa Mu Peak - Hang Dong
This is the most well-known itinerary, but there is currently no local accommodation, so you'll need to bring your own tents for the night. Alternatively, you can follow the route from Xim Vang - Sa Mu Peak - Hang Dong or vice versa.
The trek to Sa Mu - U Bo Peak may be tough, but the breathtaking natural scenery makes every challenge worthwhile. As you climb higher, you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into a surreal, fairytale-like world. It’s as if this magical place exists in a different realm, far from Earth.
After hours of effort, you’ll reach the summit of Sa Mu in the afternoon. One important tip for conquering Sa Mu - U Bo Peak is to start early in the morning, camp overnight at a shelter, and then continue your climb to the summit the next day. Although the final stretch to the summit is only about 1 km, the steep terrain can make it a one-hour trek. If you start hiking between 4 and 5 AM, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning sunrise and a view of the rolling clouds from the top.
Suggested Sa Mu - U Bo Peak Itinerary
Locals who are familiar with the dense forests can make it to the summit and back in a single day. However, for visitors, it’s more common to take 2 days and 1 night to conquer Sa Mu - U Bo Peak. This slower pace gives you the chance to enjoy both the sunset and sunrise, while also testing your endurance by spending the night on a mountain over 2,000 meters high.
Start of the Journey: At 6 AM, the group and guide meet at the central market in Tram Tau. From there, a car takes you to the People’s Committee in Ban Mu village, followed by an 8 km motorbike ride to the starting point of the trek. The road is rough and full of potholes, but that just adds to the adventure!
The Trek Begins: At 8:45 AM, you begin the climb. The trail starts with a series of gentle slopes but quickly turns into a steep and steady ascent. After about 2 hours of climbing, you reach a beautiful stream—an ideal spot for a lunch break and some photos. After the break, the trail becomes even steeper, but the views get more rewarding as you climb higher.
Overnight at the Shelter: You stay at a shelter located about 1 hour and 30 minutes from the summit. While it’s a cozy place to rest, it’s small, so you might have to share space. The evening is filled with good food, conversations, and the warmth of a shared meal before heading to bed early to prepare for the final climb.
Reaching the Summit: The climb from the shelter to the summit begins early in the dark, using headlamps to navigate the path. By 6:15 AM, you reach the summit, greeted by the breathtaking beauty of the sunrise and the vast sea of clouds.
The Descent: The trail down toward Lang Cheu offers gorgeous scenery, from moss-covered trees to ancient forests, including the famous "miracle tree." The path is often muddy and slippery, even on dry days. You stop for lunch near the miracle tree before continuing the descent.
End of the Journey: By 4:30 AM, you reach the foot of the mountain, filled with a sense of accomplishment.
What about accommodation?
A very good question, as the accommodation service here is still very marginal, so we have a few suggestions for you when trekking in Sa Mu - U Bo Peak.
From Hanoi, you travel to Son La, Bac Yen district, and the town of Ta Xua. The road is easy to follow but has many twists and turns, which can cause car sickness or motion sickness. In Ta Xua, you'll easily find numerous host families near the “Dinosaur Spine” – a narrow mountainous road that looks like the spine of a dinosaur emerging from the grounds if looked from above.
Phố Núi Homestay: the complex has many rooms resembling birdhouses overlooking the valley.
Sơn Tra Homestay: is about 10 minutes by motorcycle from the site, located halfway up the mountain with panoramic views over the valley and the dinosaur spine. The complex features independent private rooms and community halls.
Tà Xua Ecolodge: is a new resort, recently operational with separate bungalows facing the valley, a swimming pool, and a large campus.
If you opt for sleeping on-site, please note that there are 2 shelters on the Tram Tau route (Yen Bai), 3 on the Xim Vang route (Yen Bai), and none on the Hang Dong route so you'll need to bring tents if you decide to spend the night there.
