How to Get to Hoàng Su Phì

To get to Hoàng Su Phì from Hanoi, take the National Highway No. 2 to Ha Giang before reaching the Tan Quang intersection. There, turn left and go for about 56 km to reach your destination. There are three main ways to reach Hoàng Su Phì that we suggest.

For once, travelers can take a sleeper bus. There are plenty of buses from My Dinh or Gia Lam Bus Station in Hanoi heading to Ha Giang City at 8:30 A.M., 12:00 P.M., and 4:30 P.M. The trip itself takes about 6-8 hours, but you should request to be dropped off at Tan Quang junction, which is closer to Hoàng Su Phì and serves as a convenient transfer point. From there, you can either catch a local bus (we don't recommend this option as the bus is uncomfortable, not frequent and unreliable) or rent a motorbike at local rentals to finish the remaining leg of the trip. 

Alternatively, if you are adventurous and an experienced biker, you can rent a motorbike from Hanoi and travel by it throughout the entire journey. While the ride is long (about 8-10 hours) and can be challenging—especially during the rainy season—the breathtaking views and flexibility make it a worthwhile option. You can stop for photos, interact with locals, and truly immerse yourself in the journey.

Last but not least, there's the limousine or private car, a more comfortable, faster, and customizable option for groups or families. Best Time to Visit Hoàng Su Phì

Generally, Hoàng Su Phì is beautiful all the time. However, there are three periods that you don't want to miss.

April - June: The flood season: Starting from April to June every year, the locals flood the fields to prepare for the new crop. As a result, the water will seep into every terrace, covering the entire valley, making the scenery in Hoang Su Phi extremely attractive and sparkling. Coming at this time, you can admire the beauty of the labor of the ethnic people plowing and sowing, along with the softly curved terraced fields looming in the white clouds or simply the image of small roofs peeking out under the hills.

August - October: The harvest season: The ripe rice season in Hoang Su Phi starts around August and lasts until mid-October every year. Hoang Su Phi in the ripe rice season is a beautiful natural picture that everyone wants to admire once, with terraced fields winding like golden silk strips. Standing in front of the vast landscape, visitors will be amazed when looking at thousands of terraced fields spread out evenly, winding around the hillsides and mountainsides. The clouds and autumn sunlight add to the golden season picture, creating an unforgettable moment. November-March: Winter and Spring: For those who love the cold, the period from November to March will be the ideal time to start the journey to Hoang Su Phi.  A sample four-day itinerary might begin with an overnight sleeper bus from Hanoi to Tân Quang, arriving early in the morning. From there, you can transfer directly to Hoàng Su Phì, arriving by midday and checking into a homestay. Day two might involve a full-day trek to neighboring villages, visiting tea hills and taking in the golden rice fields. On the third day, you can immerse yourself in a local market or festival, depending on the season, and spend the evening enjoying Dao or H’Mông cuisine with your host family. Day four is your return journey to Hanoi, ideally leaving early to catch transport back from Tân Quang.

Advice and tips

Before and during your trip in Hoàng Su Phì, there are many travel tips that you should be aware of. The roads here, despite having been paved, are still narrow and serpentine, often carved directly into the mountainside, which can be dangerous. If you plan to ride a motorbike, opt for a manual or semi-automatic model, which offers better control on steep inclines. It’s also advisable to wear proper gear, including a helmet, gloves, and waterproof clothing, and always be careful during the trip. Though you do not need a special permit to enter Hoàng Su Phì, foreign travelers are required to register with the local police when checking into homestays or hotels. Always carry your passport and a few photocopies along with your identity documents, as some areas closer to the Chinese border have additional security checks.

 In addition, the availability of cash is limited in Hoàng Su Phì, and credit cards are rarely accepted, even at eco-lodges or homestays. While there is a bank in the area, it is often unreliable and uncomfortable, so it’s best to withdraw sufficient money in Hanoi before departing. Moreover, mobile phone signal and internet access are weak or nonexistent in certain parts of the area, particularly in more remote villages. It’s recommended to download offline maps such as Maps.me or Google Maps in advance and prepare for periods without network coverage.
