Fansipan Mountain in Sapa: The Highest Peak in Vietnam
Fansipan Mountain, located in Lao Cai province, Vietnam, is the highest peak in the country and in the entire Indochina Peninsula. Reaching an elevation of 3,147.3 meters (10,326 feet) above sea level, Fansipan is often referred to as the "Roof of Indochina." This majestic mountain is part of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range and is a prominent landmark in northern Vietnam.
Fansipan Mountain in Sapa offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors, from thrilling outdoor adventures to cultural exploration and spiritual rejuvenation. Whether you're seeking an adrenaline-pumping trek to the summit or a peaceful retreat amidst nature, Fansipan has something for everyone to enjoy. If you’re visiting Fansipan soon, here are some of the highlights at Mount Fansipan that you shouldn’t miss out on!
Cable Car to Fansipan Mountain
After being put into operation, the Fansipan cable car has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the highest, longest, and most modern three-rope cable car system in the world, the first to be installed in Asia. The cable ride is 6,262.5 m long with 6 main pillars, each pillar spaced 1 km apart. The system consists of 33 cabins, each cabin accommodating 35 passengers, with a transportation capacity of up to 2,000 passengers per hour. Now, you can reach the "Roof of Indochina" in only about 15 minutes instead of 2 days like before.
There are 5 cable car stations: Sapa Station, Muong Hoa Station, Fansipan Station, Hoang Lien Station, and Do Quyen Station. With transparent glass doors, the cable car provides an impressive 15-minute experience for tourists. Sitting inside the cable car cabin, you can admire the entire Northwestern nature, the majestic landscape of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, as well as the serene and picturesque Muong Hoa valley.
Hiking to Fansipan Mountain in Sapa
Hiking to Fansipan Mountain in Sapa is a challenging yet rewarding adventure in northern Vietnam. On one hand, the trails leading to Fansipan's summit are rugged, with rocky paths, steep ascents, and sections that require scrambling. The first 2000 meters of the trail are relatively easy, but after that, it becomes steep and slippery. On the other, you are rewarded with breathtaking scenery along the way. The highlight of the hike is, of course, reaching the summit, where hikers are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and distant landscapes.
It takes nearly 2 days to reach the top of Mount Fansipan. For those who have trekking experience and good health, only one day of rest is needed. For those who want to reach the summit but don’t want to put in physical effort, you can opt for a cable car ride instead. It may not be as fulfilling, but the ride is (arguably) equally as beautiful.
Muong Hoa Funicular
The Muong Hoa funicular ride connects the town of Sapa with the Fansipan cable car station. This route has a total length of 2 km and a travel time of 6 minutes. Although the journey lasts only 6 minutes, this railway line takes passengers through rustic villages, lush green valleys, and majestic mountain ranges. From the train, passengers can admire the stunning natural landscape of Sapa.
The train station is inspired by classical French architecture, with a crescent-shaped roof, high ceilings, and decorative details inspired by steering wheels, railway tracks, railroad badges, etc. Inside the train, passengers are immersed in a stylish European-style space. The predominant brown color scheme creates a cozy and luxurious atmosphere. Wooden seats and antique ceiling fans combined with gentle yellow lighting make the space look very relaxing. Transparent glass doors open up to the beautiful scenery outside, providing passengers with an unforgettable experience.
Bich Van Thien Tu
Bich Van Thien Tu, or Bich Van Zen Monastery, is a temple located on the high peak of Fansipan mountain in Sapa. It is a spiritual complex with a blend of traditional and modern architecture, sitting at an altitude of 3,037m. This spiritual structure is built in the architectural style of the Tran dynasty. Symmetrically on both sides are the temples of Saint Tran and the Three Holy Mothers, also featuring architectural elements and decorative patterns in the style of the Tran dynasty.
In front of the temple, there is a large bronze bell adorned with intricate floral motifs, along with a statue of Quan Yin. Here, you will be surrounded by the fragrance of incense and enchanted by the beautiful scenery of the mountains.
The Bich Van Thien Tu is accessible by cable car.
Amitabha Buddha Statue
The statue of Amitabha Buddha, located within the Sun World Fansipan Legend complex, has received a Guinness World Record for the copper statue located at the highest altitude in Asia.
The giant Buddha statue stands at a height of 21.5 meters, crafted from tens of thousands of bronze plates, each 5 mm thick, with a total weight of 62 tons. It consists of 3 levels: the top level is the Buddha statue cast in bronze placed on a lotus pedestal. The second level is the preaching hall, and the first level is a resting place for tourists to enjoy tea and vegetarian dishes.
Unlike many other Buddha statues in spiritual sites that are often painted white or gilded, the giant Buddha statue on Fansipan's peak is painted in dark colors to blend harmoniously with the majestic natural landscape of the Northwestern region.
Bodhisattva Statue
Located on the peak of Fansipan mountain in Sapa, the spiritual and cultural complex of Fansipan brings together structures following the traditional Vietnamese temple architecture, exuding a mysterious and transcendental beauty.
The bronze statue of Quan Yin, standing 12 meters tall and weighing 18 tons, gazes towards the East. In her right hand, she holds a willow branch, while in her left hand, she holds a vase, symbolizing compassion and mercy.
With folded hands in front of the bronze statue of Quan Yin Bodhisattva overlooking the people below, visitors will feel a profound sense of peace.
