How To Travel To Ninh Binh From Sapa ?

Traveling through Vietnam is always an adventure, and one of the most exciting journeys you can take is from the mountainous town of Sapa to the picturesque landscapes of Ninh Binh. Traveling between Sapa and Ninh Binh gives you a chance to experience a variety of Vietnam's landscapes and cultures, from the mountains and terraced rice fields of Sapa to the karst scenery and ancient temples of Ninh Binh. In this post, I’ll guide you through the best ways to get from Sapa to Ninh Binh, helping you choose the option that fits your travel style and budget.

The Distance From Sapa To Ninh Binh

Sapa and Ninh Binh are both must-visit destinations on the Vietnam tourist map. Sapa is located in the northwest of Vietnam, in Lao Cai Province, near the Chinese border. Ninh Binh, on the other hand, is situated south of Hanoi, known for its stunning karst landscapes and historical sites.

The Sapa to Ninh Binh distance is approximately 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) by road. You can get from Sapa to Ninh Binh (or vice versa) in 7–8 hours approximately, depending on the mode of transportation.

How To Get From Sapa To Ninh Binh

How to get from Sapa to Ninh Binh by bus

Taking the bus is the cheapest way to get from Sapa to Ninh Binh. The bus ride takes around 8-9 hours, and is pretty straightforward. It’s quite a long journey, so be prepared with some snacks, a good book, or a playlist to keep you entertained. There are a few bus companies that operate this route: Ket Doan Travel, Ha Son, Trung Dung, Viet Anh, Quang Anh or Phuc An. The earliest ride you can take is 1 PM–8 PM, and the latest is 10 PM–5 AM. Tickets generally cost between $15 to $20. Prices can vary slightly depending on the bus company and the type of bus (sleeper vs. standard). You can book tickets online and in advance.

Pros

Sleeper buses have reclining seats/beds, making it easier to catch some sleep.

You'll get to see a lot of beautiful Vietnamese countryside along the way.

It’s a direct route, so no need to change buses or deal with complicated transfers.

It's one of the cheapest ways to travel between these two places.

Cons

8-9 hours on a bus can be tiring, especially if you’re not used to long bus rides.

The drivers usually speak little to no English

The bus will have limited stops for bathroom breaks and food.

How to get from Sapa to Ninh Binh by train

There are no direct trains from Sapa to Ninh Binh, you have to make a stop in Hanoi. But taking the train is a solid option if you don’t want to spend 8 hours on a bus. You can catch the train from Lao Cai to Hanoi first, then take the train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

From Lao Cai Station, you can either take the SP4 (9:40 PM – 5:30 AM) or the SP2 (8:30 PM – 4:20 AM) to Hanoi. From Hanoi Station, take the earliest train SE7 to Ninh Binh, departing at 6 AM and arriving at 8:14 AM. If you want to catch later trains, visit the Vietnam Railways website for more schedules.

The overall time can add up to 12 hours. The travel cost in total can add up to $50, depending on the class (hard seat, soft seat, or sleeper cabin).

Pros

Trains offer more space to move around, and sleeper cabins are quite comfortable for overnight travel.

The train ride offers beautiful views of the countryside, especially if you travel during the day.

Trains are generally smoother than buses, so it’s easier to relax and sleep.

Trains usually have toilets and sometimes a dining car, making the journey a bit more convenient.

Cons

With the transfer in Hanoi, the journey can take a bit longer.

You’ll need to manage the transfer between trains in Hanoi, which can be a hassle with luggage.

Trains have fixed departure times, so you’ll need to plan your travel around the train schedule.

How to get from Sapa to Ninh Binh by private car

Traveling from Sapa to Ninh Binh by private car is a fantastic option if you’re looking for flexibility and comfort. The drive typically takes around 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. If you don’t want to switch between trains, you’re traveling with your family and don’t mind spending a little bit more, I’d say go with a private car. Hiring a private car can cost anywhere from $150 to $250, depending on the type of car and the company you choose.

Pros

You can set your own schedule, make stops whenever you want, and enjoy the journey at your own pace.

Private cars are generally more comfortable and spacious than buses or trains.

No transfers or waiting around; it’s a straight shot from Sapa to Ninh Binh.

You can stop along the way to take in the beautiful scenery, grab a bite to eat, or stretch your legs.

Cons

This is the most expensive option compared to buses or trains.

You’re reliant on the driver’s knowledge and driving skills, so make sure to hire a reputable company.
