What to do on Cham Island?
Snorkeling and diving on Cham island
Cham Island is home to vibrant coral reefs, making it a popular spot for scuba diving. Most Cham Island tours include snorkeling, but if you’re exploring on your own, you can buy tickets for diving at the pier or your guesthouse. Options range from sea walking, snorkeling, to full-on scuba diving, with prices varying from 200,000 VND to 1 million VND depending on the activity.
Snorkeling is one of the most popular things to do on Cham Island. There are several diving and snorkeling spots in the Cham Islands. The best are located along the rocks of the smaller islets, which surround the main island.
Tours often take you to Hon Nhon Beach, which is teeming with marine life. Other dive sites in the Cu Lao Cham Marine Park include Hon Tai South, Hon Tai North, and Xin Vinh.
The corals in Cham Island are intact and vividly colored. There are also clownfish, turtles, octopuses, and even starfish! Don't forget your camera, the waters are crystal clear so you will be able to take amazing pictures.
Swimming on Cham Island
Cham Island is famous for its stunning beaches with white sand and crystal-clear water. Some of the best spots include Bai Ong, Bai Chong, Bai Bim, Bai Bac, Bai Lang, Bai Huong, and Bai Xep. Bai Lang and Bai Huong are close to fishing villages, where you’ll find local homes and homestays for an overnight stay. Bai Ong is the go-to spot for day-trippers to Cham Island, with a few restaurants and freshwater showers. Bai Ong is one kilometer from the village on a pleasant walk or bike ride, perfect for sunsets. It is known as the ‘Palm Beach’ and is where the tours stop. On this beach, there are hammocks under the palapas which are available for a small fee. It's also where most of the snorkeling and water sports kick off. If you prefer something a little less crowded, head for Bai Xep.
Sightseeing on Cham island
Eo Gió
Eo Gió, located on the eastern side of Cham Island near Bai Huong, about 3 km from Bai Lang, is a prime spot for catching the sunrise. It’s surrounded by cliffs that form a natural amphitheater, giving it the name "Wind Strait." The path to Eo Gió is paved, making it an easy walk, and you’ll see wildflowers along the way. From here, you can also catch a glimpse of the Cham Island Lighthouse.
Ancient Well
The Cham Well, also known as the Xóm Cấm Well, is about 200 years old and located at a crossroads in the Xóm Cấm residential area. This well is not just a source of fresh water for locals but is also wrapped in local legends. The people of Cham Island believe the well’s water can not only quench thirst but also treat seasickness. They even have a remedy involving boiling the well water with a special local herb to ease the symptoms.
Parasailing
For the adrenaline junkies, parasailing on Cham Island is a must-try. You’ll be outfitted with a life jacket and harnessed to a parachute, which is then towed by a speedboat. As you rise higher, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the vast ocean below. The experience lasts about 10-15 minutes, reaching an altitude of around 70 meters. It's the perfect activity for those who love adventure and the feeling of freedom in the air.
Island Hopping
Cham Island is surrounded by seven smaller islands, so if you’re up for more exploring, you can rent a boat to visit these neighboring islands. A half-day boat rental costs about 700,000 VND, and it can accommodate up to 10 people. If you’re just interested in seeing the swifts’ nests on the islands, a boat ride will set you back around 300,000 VND. Cham Island is the only place in Quang Nam province where these birds make their home.
Bai Lang Village
This is the main hub of the Cham Islands. It’s where you’ll find everything from markets, restaurants and guesthouses to souvenir shops and Bai Ong Beach. A great place to start your adventure.
Cu Lao Cham Marine Museum
Right when you arrive in Bai Lang, this is your first stop. The museum is part of the Marine Protected Area and gives you a nice overview of the island’s culture and marine life.
Hai Tang Pagoda
Built in 1759, this pagoda is a must-see. It’s an important religious site dedicated to Buddha and the gods that the local fishermen pray to.
Bai Huong Fishing Village
About 5km southeast of the main port, this village is tiny and the beaches aren’t as pristine, but if you’re looking for an authentic experience, this is the spot.
How to get to Cham Island ?
Cham Island is about 18 km from Cua Dai Beach and 45 km from Da Nang. You’ve got two main ways to reach the island: by speedboat or wooden boat.
The speedboat will set you back around 350,000 VND. That breaks down into 260,000 VND for the ride, 70,000 VND for the sightseeing fee, and a 20,000 VND environmental and security fee. If you’re traveling with kids under 1 year old, they ride for free; kids aged 1 to under 8 get a 50% discount. The ride is quick, taking only 15-20 minutes.
Wooden boats are still around but are mainly used for transporting goods and locals. If you choose this option, expect the journey to take about an hour and a half.
If you’re moving to Cham Island from Hoi An or Danang, you can book a Cham Island day tour from travel agencies or hotels in Hoi An Ancient Town, Tam Ky City, or Da Nang. These tours typically include transport, lunch, entrance fees, and some activities. Prices range from 500,000 VND to 700,000 VND per person.
Once you’re on the island, you can explore on foot or rent a motorbike for the day, which will cost you between 120,000 VND and 150,000 VND depending on the type.
Where to stay on Cham Island?
Most people visit Cham Island just for the day, but if you want to stay overnight, don’t expect luxury. The island is still pretty untouched, so accommodations are basic. Rooms go for about 200,000 VND to 500,000 VND per night.
Here are a few places you might consider: Cham Island Homestay, Bai Huong Homestay, Hammock Homestay, Hạnh Ly Homestay, and Hải Long Homestay.
You can find guesthouses or homestays in Bai Lang, the main village on Hon Lao Island. Prices range from 150,000 to 600,000 VND per night, depending on the room. The accommodations are simple—think beds with mosquito nets, fans, and basic bathrooms with Western-style toilets.
Your hosts will usually offer meals and can organize activities like snorkeling, fishing, and hiking. These activities typically cost between 100,000 and 150,000 VND.
