What to Do in Vietnam for 5 Days : A Detailed Itinerary

Vietnam, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning landscapes, is a traveler's dream. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a history buff, or simply looking to unwind, Vietnam has something to offer. This 5-day Vietnam itinerary will take you through some of the most iconic destinations in the country, starting from the bustling capital of Hanoi to the serene waters of Ha Long Bay, the charming town of Hoi An, and the dynamic city of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Let’s dive into this whirlwind tour of Vietnam.

Day 1: Exploring Hanoi

Morning

Start your day early at 8:00 AM with a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This iconic site is the final resting place of Vietnam's revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh. The mausoleum is located in the Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in 1945. The solemn atmosphere and the historical significance make it a must-visit.

Afterward, head to the One Pillar Pagoda, a short walk from the mausoleum. This unique structure, built in the shape of a lotus flower, dates back to the 11th century and is a symbol of purity in Buddhism.

Mid-Morning

Next, visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university, built in 1070. The temple is dedicated to Confucius and honors scholars and literary figures. The tranquil gardens and traditional architecture offer a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.

Afternoon

Enjoy a traditional Vietnamese lunch at one of Hanoi's many local restaurants. Pho, a famous noodle soup, or Bun Cha, grilled pork with noodles, are excellent choices.

Post-lunch, take a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake, located in the heart of Hanoi. The lake is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a serene environment amidst the urban setting. Don’t miss the Ngoc Son Temple, located on a small island in the lake.

Evening

In the evening, explore the bustling Old Quarter. This area is known for its narrow streets, vibrant markets, and French colonial architecture. It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs, sample street food, and experience the local nightlife.

Conclude your day with a traditional Water Puppet Show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre. This unique art form dates back to the 11th century and provides a fascinating glimpse into Vietnamese culture and folklore.

Day 2: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

Morning

Depart from Hanoi early in the morning for the journey to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its emerald waters and thousands of limestone islands. The drive takes approximately 3-4 hours.

Late Morning to Afternoon

Upon arrival, embark on a cruise around Ha Long Bay. The stunning karst landscapes and crystal-clear waters make for an unforgettable experience. Most cruises include a delicious seafood lunch on board.

During the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of the bay’s caves and grottoes, such as Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) or Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace Cave). These caves are adorned with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, creating a mesmerizing underground landscape.

Evening

As the sun sets, the bay takes on a magical hue. Enjoy dinner on the boat, surrounded by the beauty of Ha Long Bay at dusk. Some cruises offer evening activities such as squid fishing or karaoke, allowing you to unwind and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Day 3: Ha Long Bay to Hoi An

Morning

Start your day with a light breakfast on the boat while enjoying the sunrise over Ha Long Bay. After breakfast, continue exploring the bay with a visit to a floating fishing village or a pearl farm.

Late Morning to Afternoon

Return to the harbor and transfer back to Hanoi. Depending on the traffic, you should arrive in Hanoi in the early afternoon. Head straight to Noi Bai Airport for your flight to Da Nang.

Evening

Arrive in Da Nang and transfer to Hoi An, a charming town known for its well-preserved ancient architecture and vibrant lantern-lit streets. After checking into your hotel, take a leisurely evening stroll around the old town. Hoi An is especially magical at night when the lanterns light up the streets, creating a warm and enchanting atmosphere.

Day 4: Hoi An to Saigon

Morning

Start your day at 8:00 AM with a visit to the Japanese Covered Bridge, an iconic symbol of Hoi An. This beautifully preserved bridge dates back to the 18th century and reflects the town’s historical ties with Japan.

Next, explore the ancient houses and assembly halls in the old town. The Tan Ky House and the Fujian Assembly Hall are excellent examples of the unique blend of architectural styles in Hoi An.

Late Morning

Enjoy a traditional Vietnamese breakfast at one of the local cafes. Cao Lau, a local noodle dish unique to Hoi An, is a must-try.

Noon

Check out from your hotel and head to Da Nang Airport for your flight to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).

Afternoon

Upon arrival in Saigon, transfer to your hotel and then start your city tour. Begin with a visit to the Reunification Palace, a landmark of great historical significance. The palace was the site of the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 when a North Vietnamese tank crashed through its gates.

Next, visit the War Remnants Museum. This museum offers a sobering look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of the Vietnamese people, with exhibits featuring photographs, artifacts, and military equipment.

Evening

Explore the bustling Ben Thanh Market, where you can shop for souvenirs, try local snacks, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of Saigon. Conclude your day with dinner at a rooftop restaurant, enjoying the panoramic views of the city skyline.

Day 5: Saigon to Ben Tre and Departure

Morning

Start your day early and embark on a day trip to the Mekong Delta. Drive to Ben Tre, known as the "land of coconut trees," and board a boat to explore the delta’s intricate waterways.

Visit local workshops where you can see how coconut candy, rice paper, and other traditional products are made. You’ll also have the chance to sample these local delicacies.

Mid-Morning

Take a leisurely bike ride or walk through the serene countryside, passing by lush orchards and rice paddies. Visit a local family’s home and learn about their way of life in the delta.

Afternoon

Enjoy a traditional Vietnamese lunch featuring fresh ingredients from the Mekong Delta. After lunch, continue exploring the waterways by sampan, a small wooden boat, before heading back to Saigon.

Evening

Arrive back in Saigon in the late afternoon. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some time for last-minute shopping or sightseeing. Then, transfer to Tan Son Nhat Airport for your departure.

Conclusion

This 5-day Vietnam itinerary offers a glimpse into the diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Vietnam. From the historical landmarks of Hanoi to the natural wonders of Ha Long Bay, the charming streets of Hoi An, and the dynamic energy of Saigon, each destination provides a unique experience. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, cruising through emerald waters, or savoring local delicacies, this journey promises to be a memorable adventure.
