How to Get to Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Phu Quoc is an island located 45 km from the mainland and 115 km from Rach Gia city. Currently, there are two ways to get to Phu Quoc island that you can choose from: by plane or by boat/ferry.

 

Flights to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc's airport has been operational since December 2012, making it easier than ever to get to Phu Quoc, Vietnam, by plane. You can now reach Phu Quoc from Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang Airport, Can Tho Airport, and Cat Bi-Hai Phong Airport, with multiple flight schedules each day.

From Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi: It only takes 2 hours to fly to Phu Quoc. Many airlines operate flights to Phu Quoc, such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, and Bamboo Airways. Round-trip ticket prices from Hanoi to Phu Quoc range from 1.2 million VND to 2.5 million VND during the low season and from 1.6 million VND to 3.5 million VND during the high season. 

Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City: This airport also has many airlines offering direct flights to Phu Quoc, including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, and Bamboo Airways. The flight time from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc is only 1 hour. Round-trip ticket prices from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc range from 1.2 million VND to 2 million VND during the low season and from 1.5 million VND to 2.5 million VND during the high season. Flight times are very flexible, from 6:20 AM to 9:10 PM.

Da Nang Airport: Only Jetstar Pacific operates direct flights from Da Nang to Phu Quoc. The flight departs daily at 4:45 PM from Da Nang and at 7:15 PM from Phu Quoc. The flight time from Da Nang to Phu Quoc is about 2 hours. The average round-trip ticket price to Phu Quoc is 2.5 million to 3.5 million VND.

Can Tho Airport: Similar to Da Nang, from Can Tho Airport, only Vietnam Airlines operates direct flights to Phu Quoc. There is one flight per day, departing at 5:45 PM from Can Tho and at 7:10 PM from Phu Quoc. The round-trip ticket price ranges from 2 million VND to 3 million VND. The flight time from Can Tho to Phu Quoc is about 1 hour.

Hai Phong Airport: Vietjet Air operates one direct flight to Phu Quoc per day, with a flight time of over 2 hours. Flights from Hai Phong depart at 10:25 AM, and the return flights from Phu Quoc depart at 1:05 PM. The average round-trip price is from 1.9 million VND to 2.5 million VND.

 

Ferry to Phu Quoc

Before the construction of the airport, maritime transport was the primary means for residents and tourists to travel to Phu Quoc Island. There are two main ports for traveling to Phu Quoc by boat/ferry: Rach Gia and Ha Tien. However, this mode of transport is more suitable for those departing from Ho Chi Minh City or the southern provinces. If you are traveling from Hanoi, you still need to book a flight to Ho Chi Minh City before taking a boat/ferry to the island.

 

How to Get from Ho Chi Minh to Phu Quoc?

Since Phu Quoc is an island city, there are no direct road connections to it. If you choose to travel from Ho Chi Minh City, you will need to combine travel by coach and by ferry. The travel time by road will be longer compared to flying because you have to switch between different coaches and ferries.

From Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc by road, you can choose between two routes: Ho Chi Minh City - Rach Gia - Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City - Ha Tien - Phu Quoc.

 

Route 1: Ho Chi Minh - Rach Gia - Phu Quoc

Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia

The distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia is about 270 km. The most convenient means of transport is by coach. Ticket prices range from 120,000 VND to 150,000 VND per ticket per way. The travel time to Rach Gia is about 6 to 7 hours.

Some bus companies you can consider are Mai Linh (Tel: 08.3929.2929) and Phương Trang (Tel: 08.3833.3468). You can also find high-quality bus routes departing from the Western provinces with companies such as Kumho Samco, Ba Dũng, Tuyết Hon, and Châu Hà.

Rach Gia to Phu Quoc

From Rach Gia, you need to take a speed ferry to Phu Quoc. Several ferry companies operate this route, including Phu Quoc Express, Superdong, Thanh Thoi speed ferry, and Hoa Binh Ship. The travel time by speed ferry from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc is about 2.5 hours.

Ticket Prices:

  • Adults: 215,000 VND - 230,000 VND per ticket per way.

  • Children: 160,000 VND per ticket per way.

 

Route 2: Ho Chi Minh - Ha Tien - Phu Quoc

Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien

The distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien is about 350 km. You can travel by coach, with ticket prices ranging from 150,000 VND to 200,000 VND per ticket per way. The travel time to Ha Tien is about 8 to 9 hours. Some bus companies you can consider for this route include Kumho Samco and Phương Trang.

Ha Tien to Phu Quoc

From Ha Tien, you need to take a ferry to Phu Quoc. Ferry companies operating this route include Superdong and Thanh Thoi. The travel time by ferry from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc is about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Ferry Ticket Prices:

  • Adults: 185,000 VND per ticket per way.

  • Children: 130,000 VND per ticket per way.

 

How to get Around in Phu Quoc Island?

 

By Motorbike

Motorbikes are a great option for solo travelers in Phu Quoc. You can rent a motorbike at your hotel or at several rental shops in the center of Duong Dong town. Rental prices range from 120,000 VND/day (manual bikes) to 200,000 VND/day (automatic bikes) (not including gas money). When renting a motorbike, you need to provide an ID and a deposit.

Taxis are also a popular means of transportation in Phu Quoc. If it rains, taxis are a safer option compared to motorbikes or bicycles. Popular taxi companies in Phu Quoc:

In Phu Quoc, taxi fares can be higher than other means of transport, especially with longer distances to tourist attractions. Taxi fares on the island are around 17,000 VND/km.

 

By Bus

Buses in Phu Quoc operate every day from 5:00 AM, and there’s one every 15 minutes. Ticket prices range from 20,000 VND to 50,000 VND. Currently, there are three main bus routes on the island:

  • Duong Dong Town - Airport - Bai Vong (ferry terminal)

  • An Thoi - Ham Ninh - Bai Tham

  • An Thoi - Duong Dong - Ganh Dau

Buses only take you to the stops, so you will need to get a xe ôm or taxi to reach specific tourist spots.

 

By Boat

Phu Quoc is surrounded by beaches and small islands, such as An Thoi Archipelago, Hon Mong Tay, and Hon Mot, which are all attractive destinations. To reach these islands, you need to travel by boat. You can rent a private boat or contact a travel agency to purchase tickets and book tours.

 

By Cable Car

The Hon Thom Cable Car, or Phu Quoc Cable Car, is located in An Thoi Town, Phu Quoc District, Kien Giang Province. The starting point is An Thoi Station and it ends at Hon Thom Island. This cable car line is the world's longest three-wire sea-crossing cable car, stretching 7,899.9 meters.
