How to travel to Vietnam from India

If you're thinking about a trip full of rich culture, natural beauty, and exciting street food, Vietnam is a great choice. From peaceful rice fields and limestone mountains to lively cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam has something for every kind of traveler. As a tourist from India, you’ll find Vietnam affordable, friendly, and not too far away. In this article, we’ll explain how to travel to Vietnam from India in detail. You’ll learn about entry requirements, flights, visas, places to visit, and even food options that suit your dietary needs. We’ll also share some honest tips to help you plan better and avoid common mistakes.

1. What to know before you travel to Vietnam from India?

1.1. How far is Vietnam from India

Vietnam is located on the eastern edge of mainland Southeast Asia. It shares borders with China, Laos, and Cambodia and has a long coastline facing the East Sea (or South China Sea).

The average flight distance from India to Vietnam is about 3,200 km. Direct flights from major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata to Vietnam usually take around 4 to 5 hours, depending on your departure point and the destination airport in Vietnam.

1.2. Time difference

Vietnam is 1 hour and 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST). So, when it’s 12:00 noon in India, it’s 1:30 PM in Vietnam. This time difference is easy to manage and doesn’t cause much jet lag.

1.3. The climate

Vietnam has three main regions — North, Central, and South — and each has a different climate.

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa) has four seasons. Winters (Dec–Feb) can get cold, around 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F).

  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang) is warm year-round, but you should expect heavy rain from September to December.

  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) has two seasons — dry and rainy. The dry season (Dec–April) is the best time to visit. Temperatures are between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F).

The best time to travel depends on where you're going. We recommend February to April or September to November for comfortable weather across the country.

1.4. The currency

Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND). The exchange rate is roughly 1 INR = 300 VND, but this can change. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with Vietnamese currency. It’s easy to exchange money at the airport, banks, and local exchange shops.

ATMs are everywhere in big cities. Credit cards work at hotels and restaurants, but carry some cash for small shops and markets.

1.5. Is it safe to travel to Vietnam right now

Yes, Vietnam is generally a safe country to visit. Most trips go smoothly. Like in any country, you should stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busy areas.

Petty theft, like bag snatching or pickpocketing, can happen in tourist spots. We suggest using a crossbody bag and not flashing expensive items in public.

There are no mandatory vaccines required to enter Vietnam from India. Still, it’s good to have routine vaccines like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus updated before your trip. Tap water is not safe to drink, so stick to bottled or filtered water.

Travel insurance is recommended. Some Indian travelers may face minor language barriers, but people are polite and helpful. Basic English is spoken in tourist areas.

2. What are the requirements to travel to Vietnam from India?

2.1. Vietnam entry requirements for Indians

Indians need a visa to visit Vietnam. You must also have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.

Without a valid visa or e-visa, you won’t be allowed to board your flight or enter the country.

2.2. How can I get a Vietnam visa from India?

There are three main ways to get a visa to Vietnam:

2.2.1 E-Visa Vietnam

The Vietnam e-Visa is the easiest option for Indian travelers. You can apply online and get a single-entry visa that lets you stay for up to 30 days.

How to Apply for a Vietnam E-Visa:

  • Go to the official website: https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn

  • Fill out the form with your personal and passport details

  • Upload a photo and a scanned copy of your passport

  • Pay the fee online (USD 25 for single entry)

  • Wait for 3 working days

  • Download and print your visa once it is approved

2.2.2. Visa Through the Vietnamese Embassy in India

You can also apply at the Vietnamese Embassy in New Delhi.

How to Apply for a Vietnam Visa at the Embassy in India:

  • Visit the embassy or contact them by phone/email.

  • Fill out the visa application form.

  • Submit your passport, photo, visa fee, and travel documents.

  • Wait for 3 to 5 working days to collect your visa.

Contact Information for the Vietnamese Embassy in India:

  • Address: 17, Kautilya Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi - 110021

  • Phone: +91-11-26879868

  • Email: vnemb.in@gmail.com

2.2.3. Vietnam Visa on Arrival (VOA)

You can use VOA only if you get pre-approval from a licensed Vietnamese travel agency.

How it works:

  1. Apply for a visa approval letter online through an agency.

  2. When you arrive at the Vietnam airport, go to the Visa on Arrival counter.

  3. Show your approval letter, photos, and pay the stamping fee (USD 25–50 depending on visa type).

This option works well if you don’t have time to get an e-visa or embassy visa, but it’s only available at major international airports in Vietnam.

2.3. How much is the Vietnam visa fee for Indians?

  • E-Visa (Single Entry – 30 days): USD 25

  • Multiple Entry Visa (through embassy): USD 50 or more, depending on duration

  • VOA Stamping Fee: USD 25 (single entry) or 50+ (multiple entry)

3. How to travel to Vietnam from India

3.1. By flight

The easiest and most popular way to travel to Vietnam from India is by air. It’s fast, comfortable, and not too expensive if you book early.

3.1.1. Departure and arrival airports

India has many international airports with flights to Vietnam. The busiest ones include:

  • Delhi (DEL – Indira Gandhi International Airport)

  • Mumbai (BOM – Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport)

  • Bengaluru (BLR – Kempegowda International Airport)

  • Kolkata (CCU – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport)

  • Ahmedabad (AMD – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport)

In Vietnam, you can land at these main airports:

  • Hanoi (HAN – Noi Bai International Airport) in the north

  • Ho Chi Minh City (SGN – Tan Son Nhat International Airport) in the south

  • Da Nang (DAD – Da Nang International Airport) in central Vietnam

We recommend flying into Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, as they offer more flights and better international connections.

3.1.2. Airlines and Flights

There are direct flights between India and Vietnam, and many more with one stop.

Airlines offering direct flights:

  • VietJet Air – Direct from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

  • IndiGo – Direct flights from Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi

  • Vietnam Airlines – Sometimes offers direct seasonal flights from India

Other airlines with one-stop routes:

  • Singapore Airlines (via Singapore)

  • Thai Airways (via Bangkok)

  • AirAsia (via Kuala Lumpur)

  • Scoot, Malaysia Airlines, and Cathay Pacific

  •

3.1.3. Flight schedules and frequencies

Flights from India to Vietnam are available almost every day. Major routes like Delhi–Ho Chi Minh City or Mumbai–Hanoi have daily or several flights per week.

Flight time for direct routes:

  • Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City: Around 5.5 hours

  • Kolkata to Hanoi: Around 3 hours

One-stop flights usually take 8 to 12 hours, depending on the layover time and airline.

3.1.4. Flight costs

India to Vietnam flight ticket prices vary based on when and where you book.

  • Low season round trip (April to August): around INR 15,000 to 25,000

  • High season round trip (November to January): around INR 25,000 to 40,000

Direct flights cost a bit more, but they save time. Connecting flights can be cheaper but less convenient.

Tip: Try to book at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance for the best price.

3.1.5. How to book cheap flights to Vietnam from India

Here are some tips we always follow when booking flights:

  • Use flight comparison sites like Skyscanner, Google Flights, or Kayak.

  • Book in incognito mode or clear your cookies to avoid price jumps.

  • Avoid booking last minute unless there’s a special deal.

  • Choose mid-week flights (Tuesday or Wednesday) for cheaper rates.

  • Fly from major cities like Delhi or Mumbai for better prices.

  • Set fare alerts to track prices before you buy.

Sometimes, booking two one-way tickets instead of a round trip can also save money.

3.2. By road

It is technically possible to travel to Vietnam by road, but it is very long and complicated. You’ll have to cross multiple countries.

Your multi-country route might look like this:

  • India → Myanmar → Thailand → Laos → Vietnam

To do this, you need:

  • Travel permits and visas for all countries in between

  • Time, which may take up to weeks

  • Border-crossing knowledge, as each country has its own regulations

We honestly don’t recommend this unless you’re an experienced overland traveler. It's time-consuming, and crossing Myanmar can be restricted depending on the political situation.

3.3. By rail

There is no direct train from India to Vietnam. However, you could technically do this route by combining trains and buses:

  1. India to China (through Nepal or Myanmar, very complicated)

  2. Then train from China to Vietnam

Vietnam and China are connected by rail. You can take a train from Nanning or Beijing to Hanoi.

But again, this takes a lot of time, planning, and visas for multiple countries. We only recommend it for those who want an adventurous journey and don’t mind the hassle.

4. What to bring and not to bring to Vietnam

What to Bring

  • Passport and visa (if needed): Double-check the expiration date and visa requirements.

  • Indian Rupees and US Dollars: Bring some USD in cash to exchange. ATMs are available in cities, but having some cash helps in rural areas.

  • Clothing: Light cotton clothes for hot weather, a jacket for cooler mountain regions, and modest outfits for temples.

  • Shoes: Comfortable walking shoes or sandals.

  • Travel adapter: Vietnam uses Type A, C, and D plugs. Voltage is 220V.

  • Medicines: Basic first-aid kit and any prescription medicines.

  • Toiletries: Some rural areas might not have your preferred brands.

  • Reusable water bottle: Helps you stay hydrated and reduce plastic waste.

  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent: The sun is strong and mosquitoes are common, especially near water.

What Not to Bring

  • Large amounts of Indian Rupees: You can’t exchange INR easily in Vietnam.

  • Prohibited items: Firearms, narcotics, and drones without permission are not allowed.

  • Too many valuables: Petty theft can happen, especially in busy areas.

Currency Restrictions

  • You must declare amounts over USD 5,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies upon arrival or departure.

  • It’s also illegal to take more than 15 million VND (about USD 600) in local cash out of the country without declaring.
