Traveling To Vietnam After Typhoon Yagi: Is It Safe?

Typhoon Yagi struck Vietnam with force, leaving behind a trail of destruction that affected many towns and communities, particularly along the northern coast. If you’re planning on visiting Vietnam, but don’t know if it’s safe to do so, we’re here to help.

Now, as Vietnam rebuilds and reopens, travelers have the unique opportunity to witness a country not only healing but reinventing itself. From helping local communities recover to exploring revitalized destinations, traveling through Vietnam post-Yagi offers an unforgettable experience. In this guide, we’ll tell you all about traveling to Vietnam after Typhoon Yagi, if it’s safe to visit, and how you can play a part in its inspiring recovery.

Vietnamese tourism comes back after Yagi

Despite the temporary disruption, major tourist destinations in northern Vietnam are showing great resilience. In Hanoi, the heavy rains have stopped, and iconic sites such as Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature and the old quarters are once again welcoming visitors. Hai Phong, the gateway to the islands of Cat Ba and Lan Ha, is fully operational with ferry and boat services.

Ha Long Bay, although temporarily inaccessible, is once again open to cruises. Visitors can explore this UNESCO World Heritage natural wonder, with its spectacular karst formations.

In mountainous regions such as Sa Pa and Lao Cai, landscapes of rice terraces are once again accessible. The town of Sa Pa offers unique experiences in hiking and discovering the local ethnic minorities.

Other destinations in the north, such as Mai Chau and the Pu Luong rice fields, are also ready to welcome travelers. These lesser-known places offer authentic experiences and a glimpse of rural Vietnamese life.

Reopening of tourist sites in the North

Hanoi: Visits to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, and the Museum of Ethnology all went smoothly.

Ninh Binh: The Trang An landscape complex and Tam Coc caves welcome visitors again.

Mai Chau and Pu Luong: Tourist destinations and villages are open for visitors, offering enchanting landscapes and immersion in the local culture.

Lao Cai: Sun World Fansipan Legend Park reopened on September 13, with the cable car operating from 10 AM to 2 PM, and the train operating from 10:30 AM to 3 PM. Bac Waterfall, Ta Phin Stone Garden, and other iconic tourist sites reopened on September 14. Hiking trails are available, and ethnic minority villages such as Cat Cat and Ta Phin are open to visit. The local markets are operating normally.

Quang Ninh: After extensive damage, around 80% of Ha Long Bay cruises are now ready to welcome tourists. Excursions to famous sites such as Thien Cung Cave and Titov Island have resumed since September 10. Other attractions will open as soon as repairs are completed. Between September 8 and 13, Quang Ninh recorded over 6,700 international visitors and 1,100 domestic visitors, with a total of 8,621 visits to Ha Long Bay.

Hai Phong: Connections to Cat Ba Island and cruises in Lan Ha Bay are restored. The Bao Ðai villa, although severely damaged, plans to reopen in a few days after repairs.

Ha Giang: The weather has returned to normal. The local authorities are taking steps to remedy the consequences of the landslide.

Bac Kan and Tuyen Quang: Water levels around lakes Ba Bê and Na Hang remain high, with some areas still flooded. Relief operations are underway to help affected areas.

Yen Bai: The weather is nice in towns like Mu Cang Chai and Tu Le, and roads such as the Khau Pha Pass are accessible.

Unbreakable solidarity of the Vietnamese people

In the wake of Typhoon Yagi’s destruction, the remarkable unity and resilience of the Vietnamese people have shone through. Across the hardest-hit areas, individuals and organizations rose to the occasion, offering acts of kindness that lit up even the darkest days. In Ha Long, local restaurants, alongside charity groups, distributed hundreds of free meals daily to those most affected, providing critical relief during this time of crisis.

The scenes of young volunteers, armed with shovels and pickaxes, working tirelessly to rebuild homes and restore roads are now emblematic of northern Vietnam’s recovery effort. Their shared belief that life will soon return to normal is a driving force, strengthened by the collective resolve to overcome the challenges left by the storm.

People from all walks of life have joined hands in this recovery mission, sharing warm handshakes, comforting words, and hopeful smiles. From clearing roads and parks to rebuilding homes, citizens have come together to assist in the recovery, working side by side with local authorities. Volunteers have also raised funds to repair damaged schools and provided much-needed supplies and clothing for students, ensuring that education can continue, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.

The solidarity and compassion that have emerged in response to Typhoon Yagi are testaments to the unbreakable spirit of the Vietnamese people—a community bound not just by shared hardships but by the collective will to rebuild, recover, and thrive.

Emerging Stronger and Greener

Amid recovery, Vietnam aims to create a more sustainable, disaster-resilient infrastructure that ensures safer futures for both locals and tourists.

The construction of new seawalls and improved drainage systems in coastal areas like Quang Ninh and Hai Phong is advancing rapidly. These towns and villages are being rebuilt to modern safety standards, providing enhanced protection against future storms and making them more secure destinations for travelers.

Environmental preservation is also a key focus of Vietnam’s recovery. Initiatives like reforestation, forest preservation, and biosphere protection are being prioritized to reduce the risks of flooding and erosion in vulnerable areas.

In the wake of Typhoon Yagi, Vietnam is not only rebuilding but rising stronger and greener. With the support of both the international and local communities, the country is turning its scars into opportunities for sustainable renewal.

By visiting, travelers not only explore Vietnam’s cultural and natural gems but also contribute to the rebuilding of communities that have been deeply impacted by the storm.
