Discover Quang Tri Vietnam: Top Attractions & Cuisine

Quang Tri Province is one of the cities that hold potential for tourism development in the central region and one of the most historically significant places in Vietnam. In this articlewe will provide you with the best travel guide to Quang Tri Vietnam.

What to Know About Quang Tri Vietnam?

Situated in the North Central region of Vietnam, Quang Tri province is famous for its beautiful beaches, unspoiled beauty of island, and especially historical relics, which makes a big difference compared to tourism types in other regions.

This province has played a significant role in preserving Vietnam’s history, mostly during the famous “Vietnam War against America”. Quang Tri Vietnam is not only a place for tourists to explore more about history but also an ideal destination to relax and indulge in natural beauty.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Quang Tri Province?

Quang Tri weather is harsh as it has a tropical monsoon climate, with high temperature, abundant light, rain and moisture all year round. The weather in Quang Tri is divided into two main seasons: dry season (from February to July) and rainy season (from September to January). Therefore, for beach lovers, the best time to visit Quang Tri is between March and May when the weather is warm.

For those who come to visit historical sites, you can visit any time of the year but June and July are not recommended as they are the hottest months.

How to Get to Quang Tri

There are different means of transport to get you to Quang Tri Vietnam, depending on your preference and budget. You can consider one of these options below:

By airplane: As there's no airport in Quang Tri, you should take the flight to Quang Binh at Dong Hoi Airport, and then take a bus or a taxi to Quang Tri. The total travel time would be 2 hours or longer depending on the weather condition.

By bus: Choosing a bus for moving can be a much more cost-saving and convenient way but take a longer time to reach Quang Tri and the service may not be good. There are many bus routes for you to choose with a total price of only around 230,000 VND/person. You can take a bus to Quang Tri city center from Luong Yen bus station in Hanoi or Mien Dong bus station in Ho Chi Minh City.

By train: You can also catch the train to reach Dong Ha train station in Quang Tri if you have plenty of time and want to watch the scenery along the way. It takes visitors around 13 hours from Hanoi to Dong Ha station and about a day if you travel from Ho Chi Minh City.

Top Hotels to Stay in Quang Tri

Quang Tri tourism is still in the process of developing so there is not much accommodation to stay. Visitors can choose from Deluxe hotels to a guesthouse or homestay. Quang Tri hotels often have all basic amenities such as free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, free breakfast options, and 24-hour front desk service.

  • Deluxe hotels include: Muong Thanh Grand Quang Tri Hotel, Sai Gon Dong Ha Hotel, Sepon Boutique Resort – Cua Viet Beach

  • For a little lower price, we have superior hotels such as ECO Hotel, An Hotel, Golden Quang Tri Hotel, Huu Nghi Hotel, T & T Hotel...

  • For more budget-friendly options, we recommend Palm Garden House, Quang Minh Guesthouse

Top Places to Visit in Quang Tri

Vinh Moc Tunnel

Heading to the North of Ben Hai River in Quang Tri, tourists will visit Vinh Moc Tunnel - a tunnel complex that was used by the villagers to hide from the intense bombing during the Vietnam War against America.

The tunnels were mainly dug by hand, with a total length of nearly 2 km, divided into three floors with the first floor up to 12-15 meters beneath the ground, the second is 18 meters, and the third is 23 meters so it is bigger than the famous Cu Chi tunnels where you need to crawl to move inside.

Vinh Moc tunnel has become a national relic, where the younger generation and visitors can admire Vietnamese’s patriotism, bravery and creativity during the wartime.

Cua Tung Beach

When visitors come to Quang Tri province in the summer, you should not miss the chance to bathe in sparkling blue water at Cua Tung Beach.

Cua Tung Beach is a beautiful and quiet beach located in Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province. The beach has clear water, silky sand and it is touched by soft breezes throughout the year. It's a perfect place for tourists to unwind and enjoy the great spectacle.

It is more pleasant when you come to the beach in the evening as you can feel the wind, listen to the sound of the waves and the moving leaves from the top of the trees, truly immerse yourself in the nature of Quang Tri Vietnam.

Quang Tri Citadel

Quang Tri Citadel is a must-see historical site situated in the heart of Quang Tri province.

In the war time, Quang Tri citadel was a primary military fortress, marking an important milestone of 81-day battle between Vietnam and the US. After being renovated by the government, the citadel is now a history museum and war memorial for not only war veterans and martyrs’ families but also tourists of all ages who want to learn more about Vietnam’s patriotic tradition and glorious history.

Con Co Island

Con Co Island (also known as Tiger Island) is a small island located in the rural district of Quang Tri and was created from an ancient volcano in the sea millions of years ago. Like a “green pearl” rising from the ocean, Con Co Island boasts a rich marine ecosystem with unspoiled scenery, which is highly recommended for those who want to explore more about the beauty of authentic Vietnam and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Coming here, you can try activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling to watch the diversity of coral reefs here. After long hours of immersing yourself in the ocean, you can go trekking to explore the forest nearby, which can be unforgettable memories during your trip to Quang Tri.

Top “Must-Try” Food in Quang Tri Vietnam

Banh Canh Ca Loc (Snakehead Fish Thick Noodle Soup)

Don’t forget to try one of the most famous specialties of Quang Tri - Snakehead Fish Noodle Soup (also known as Bánh canh cá lóc). This is a local dish made with thick noodles from tapioca flour and snakehead fish and often served with Pho broth and some fresh herbs.  The flavourful taste of the soup and the tender fish would definitely stimulate the appetite of any food lover.

Mussel Vermicelli in Mai Xa Village

Having a trip to Quang Tri, seafood lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try a popular dish named Mussel vermicelli in Mai Xa Village. Restaurants would prepare the broth and boiled mussels for the following morning so that their guests may enjoy a freshly prepared meal after getting them from the local catchers' boat.

Although a bowl of Mussel vermicelli in Mai Xa Village may look like simple rice noodles with mussels, it is the quality that counts. The broth tastes wonderful and retains the rich flavor of mussels, along with the spiciness of fresh chili and ginger.

Cua chicken

Once served as a royal dish during ancient times, Cua chicken is a must-try dish of Quang Tri province. The chicken is juicy and has prime taste, often made into a wide range of dishes such as grilled chicken with honey sauce, steamed chicken with lemon leaves,… for tourists to try.

Grilled Buffalo Meat Rolled with Smooth Leaves

For a long time, grilled buffalo meat with leaves has become a favorite specialty of local people in Quang Tri. The sweetness of buffalo meat combined with strong flavor from leaves create an unforgettable dish, making every tourist fall in love at first taste.

What to Buy as Gifts for Family and Friends in Quang Tri Province

Kim Long Wine

Coming to Quang Tri, you can buy Kim Long wine as a gift to bring home for your friends or family. It is a traditional wine made from rice, giving the drinkers a spicy aroma and a unique taste that can’t be missed during special occasions.

Khe Sanh coffee

Another recommended gift is Khe Sanh coffee. It is grown in the highlands area which was once a coffee plantation established during French colonization. The coffee beans are picked by hand and roasted to perfection, resulting in a sour and mild bitter taste before turning into a sweet and lingering aftertaste.
